REPORT ON THE EXCAVATIONS AT FELSŐZSOLCA-VÁRDOMB (1992-2001) The site is located to the NE of Miskolc, north of the city Felsözsolca (Borsod-AbaújZemplén county). The southern part of the triangular hill surrounded by the river Kis-Sajó was destroyed by road construction works in the beginning of the 1950's. Systematical archaeological investigations took place between 1992 and 2001 on the Várdomb ("Castle hill"). During the nine years of the excavations, about 1500 m 2 surface was surveyed, 64 graves of a Late Bronze Age (Piliny culture) urn-grave cemetery, pits and a workshop of the settlement associated with the cemetery. Apart from this, two houses and several pits from the 2-4 th century A.D. were found. The present paper deals with the results obtained on the Mediaeval period: the settlement of the 10—12 th century and the eponym feature of the locality, the motte from the 13-15 th century. Seven dwelling houses and some storage pits were unearthed between 1992-2001. No strict parcel-limits were observed inside the settlement. The houses were not arrayed in a row but similar to other Mediaeval settlements were sparsely built. The floor-space of the houses were of ordinary dimensions, the smallest one being 270 x 270 cm (House Nr. 4) and the biggest one (House Nr. 1) was 426 x 410 cm large. Six of the houses were rounded square-form and partly deepened into the earth. In two instances, stone ovens were found with surrounding traces of floor that was not deepened into the base soil (House Nr. 6. and Oven Nr. III). These could probably belong to log-houses erected on the surface of the ground. Floor plastered with mud was found in four instances, in Houses Nr. 2, 5, 6 and 7. The heating of the houses - with the exception of the half-finished House Nr. 3 - was always accomplished by stone ovens. On this site, two types of stone ovens could be separated based on their construction material. Houses Nr. 1 and 4 had an oven made of river pebbles, while the ovens for the Houses Nr. 5, 6 and 7 were constructed of limestone. The ovens were typically standing in the north132
