Végvári Lajos: Seres János (Borsodi Kismonográfiák 32. Miskolc, 1989)
JÁNOS SERES János Seres was born in Selyeb village, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. He went to secondary grammar school in Miskolc. An outstanding painter, Zsigmond Imreh, developed his skill of art. In 1938 he was accepted for School of Arts in Budapest, where his master was Gyula Rudnay, who continued the tradition of Mihály Munkácsy. The early works of art of János Seres, painted in romantic-realistic style, are the proof of the influence of his master. After the war he settled down in Miskolc, where he did a lot in developing the visual culture. His study circle of art even works today. Besides being engaged in social engagements he has found his own artistic way of painting. He was interested first and foremost in the structural elements of sights of nature. From his Hungarian ancestors István Nagy and József Egry made a deep impression on him. József Egry brought in harmony the contours and the expressive luminous phenomena. From the foreign masters he respected Cezanne for the building up his paitings and Braque for simplifying forms and his original expression of the rhythm of pictures. His actual style of painting has developed for 1960. One of the characteristicfeatures of his style is the using of harmonious contours. In order to express plastic forms and clear spatial rhythm better, he doesn't use intense colours. He works with basic tonality in which there are very importanat the constructive system of black and white spots. He had a great influence on his students as well. He has laid down the educational methods of the Teacher's Training College in Eger for ten years. As a pensionary he has more time for artistic work, but he didn't forget his students, whom he teaches in retraining courses even today. Lajos Végvári 75
