of which the archeological exploration of the caves in Miskolc and of Mountain Bükk began. Beside science and archeology ethnography also regards him as the one who belongs to it. His interest in ethnography was awaken by his zoological study specially by study of fishing. He studied first of all Hungarian folk fishing, shepherding and folk architecture. A number of books and more than a hundred articles show his ethnographic work. In addition to the above mentioned monograph on fishery another book of his "Ancient professions" was published in 1898. From among the Hungarian Ancient Professions was published a year after Fishing and Shepherding and then in 1909 The Hungarian's Main Ancient Profession was edited. His work Thesaurus of Words and Phrases of the Hungarian Shepherds unmatched so far was published in 1914 when he died. Ottó Herman never was a researcher of a head of this museum. By the time our institution came into being he had been a nation known scientist and had worked in Budapest for long and came home only to have. He bought a house site in Lillafüred where he built a cottage. Andor Leszih fellow worker then the headof the Museum from 1905 to 1950 tells about Herman's relationship to the Museum: "Ottó Herman often comes to see us to study nature in our miraculous Hungarian Tempe, to research folk customs and costumes that are now dying out, to collect fishermen's and shepherds' interesting tools with their pure Hungarian character and to fight for paleolithic find in Miskolc." The Society for Public Education and Museum Society elected him an honorary member in 1906. Ottó Herman was a genius, a polyhistor and not only a learned but a working and a creative type of it. His activity founded and determined the route and attitude and even the way of progress for three disciplines, such as science, archeology and ethnography. Our institute respectfully cherish the scientific and humane greatness of its eponym. The institute has been the centre of the Museological Organization of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County since 1963.
