In the old times the young wore a tulle, the elderly wore a thin linen kerchief above the headdress, that was pinned to the hair. The young wore a shirt made of tulle or thin linen on the embroidered, narrow-sleeved undershirt. The old, the poor and the mourners wore a raw white flax linen shirt. The skirt - called bikla or kebél- similarly to the shirt was made of white tulle, thin cotton or flax linen. Women wore several of the white skirts. An elderly woman did not wear a tulle upper skirt, but had a raw, yellowish-white flax skirt and flax shirt similar to the wear of mourning. Until about the beginning of the 20 t h century a special piece was put on over the shirt: a silk waistcoat richly ornamented by patterns in metallic threads. In the 20 t h century they began to wear a waistcoat without a back, fastened together by straps on the back. The waistcoat of the young was made of coloured cashmere, of the old was made of raw flax linen. Young girls' aprons were coloured, that of the old was white. Around the turn of the century the shirt was slowly replaced by the sleeved blouses of the bourgeoise wear of the 20 t h century. Blouses of the young and for festive occasions were made of silk, blouses of the old and for everyday use were made of linen. The elderly had worn a white blouse until when black became the colour of the old. This crinkled piece loose around the waist was worn outside the skirt. The wear of the people at the Eastern foot of the Mecsek uses bright colours and much silk. The characteristic hairdo of both women and girls is made by pulling the hair down in the forehead and then rolling it up. Womens' hair in the old times 55
