Folkweaves

Spinning, weaving, and embroidering was known to people as early as the neolithic age. The first Magyar settlers of Hungary had hemp and woollen weaves, the processing of flax was learnt probably during wandering or on their new land. The use of the cotton yarn and the cambric became widespread only as late as the nineteenth century. From this time on finer pieces of the costume worn at festivals were made not of flax but of cotton. Folkweaves in Baranya made during the past 150-200 years can be divided in two distinguishable styles characteristic of certain ethnographical groups.
