Shepherds' Art
The Ethnographical Department preserves a number of works by probably the most famous shepherd-carvers of Transdanubia, Antal Kapoli Sr. and Jr., known as „the two Kapolis". Antal Kapoli Sr. (1867-1957) was a Master of Folk Art, then he was the first folk artist to get the Kossuth Prize. Antal Kapoli Jr. (18931971) was a Master of Folk Art, too. Their favourite motifs were human and animal figures, stylized floral motifs and the old arms of Hungary. They did not use geomentrical elements. The spaces are filled in a very varied fashion: they used palmetta, chain, tendrillar motifs. They made instruments for men, like cases for salt, matches, and razors, horns, small axes, sticks, small needle-like instruments for pulling the string of drawers through the hem etc. For women they made things for engagement presents: shuttles, beaters for washing, mangles, mirror cases, etc. 28
