Shepherds' Art

The art of a people accompanies and expresses its culture. It reflects its past, history, its social-economical life. Folk art never has an end in itself. The ornamented objects and instruments conveying characteristic traits of folk art are useful objects of everyday life. Man engaged in art expresses the demands and tastes of his community not only through the shape but also through the ornaments of the instrument. The life of shepherds differed greatly from that of peasants. Guarding, grazing, tending the flock, lonely life in the woods or on meadows created a group of objects that the shepherds needed in every part of day. The shepherd, himself a part of peasantry, was also a conveyor of folk art. His instruments and ornaments that served his demands were shaped and created from the common roots of folk art. The environment, the everyday life and taste of the shepherd manifested in these traditions. He finds the material in his environment as well, the technique of decoration is more varied on his self-made objects, and his way of life, his way of thinking and taste are reflected in the ornaments.
