f\í\kü It is at this time that we celebrate the millennium of the Hungarian statehood. One thousand years ago the Hungarian Kingdom was founded by Stephen I and - after a long and painful struggle - our country became the integral part of Europe. Christianity and statehood. These two concepts were in close connection at that time, and the importance of these two concepts are reflected in the millenary exhibition of Janus Pannonius Museum. When chosing a venue for this exhibition the organizers must have thought of the role Pécsvárad played in the formation of Hungarian Christian statehood, since the first Benedictine Monastery was founded here by Stephen I himself, and the first abbot of it was Astrik, who had brought the crown for the King. Christianity and statehood - crucifix and sword. Stephen created the Hungarian state with forethought, consideration, wise reasoning, and if necessary with fire and sword. In this he received the greatest help from the Church. The King founded bishoprics, monasteries, and every tenth village could build a church. He changed the stewardship system inherited from his ancestors and father into counties whose aims and mission we are ready to recognize even today: responsibility for people, for human existence, for the nation’s intellectual and financial growth. The exhibition offers a special interpretation of these values and ideas to be a lesson for all of us.
