RÉGÉSZET - Viktor Wéber: Settlement of the Early Urnfield period at Majs–Borza-major (Southern Transdanubia, Hungary)
A Janus Pannonius Múzeum Évkönyve ( 2017 ) 202 Obr. 6. N 1., Obr. 9. G 1., Obr. 10. C 2., Obr. 11. C 3., Obr. 12. B 10., Obr. 13. D 2., Patek 1968: 108., Říhovský 1982: Taf 1. A, Taf. 26. 1–11., 14., Kőszegi 1988: 48., 63., Kalicz-Schreiber et al. 2010: 253., Typentaf. 8.6–7.). ?ere are some recent finds from Croatia, from sites dated to the Initial and Early phases of the Urnfield period, namely Križevci– Ciglana ( Karavanić 2011: 76–79.) and Kalnik–Igrišče I. ( Vrdoljak 1994: T. 21. 2., Karavanić 2009: Fig. 22. 2.), that can be seen as evidence of an earlier appearance of the rim projection in question in the Drava region. 3.3. Bowls or cups with knee-formed handles that exceed the rims Cups with handles that exceed the rims and have triangular cross-sections appeared at the end of the Bz D period or the beginning of the Ha A period and although their number decreased in the Late Urnfield period, they virtually stayed in use for the entire Urnfield period ( Patek 1968: 106., Kőszegi 1988: 29., 48., Ilon 2015: 228–230.). ?e pointed handles from the Late Urnfield period (especially typical in the Podoli 7 , Vál 8 and Dalj-Batina 9 horizons), which sometimes appeared on cups and exceeded the rim (e.g. Patek 1968: Taf. CIV. 14., Metzner-Nebelsick 2002: Taf. 59. 6.), might be seen as a distant analogy of the knee-formed handle in question. However, the handles of Majs–Borza-major (Fig. 14/ 1–4; Fig. 15/ 1) are morphologically closer to a knee-formed handle type from the Western Balkan than to the aforementioned pointed handles of the Late Urnfield period. ?e Late Bronze Age vessels with knee-formed handles from Bosnia, Croatia, and Slovenia were collected and classified by A. Velušček. He dated the feature to the Late Urnfield period and distinguished 5 types of knee-formed handles. ?e handles from Majs belong to Velušček’s Type 2 and 3 ( Velušček 1996: 63–64.). Some of the assumptions of Velušček were only partially supported by recent finds from Croatia and Slovenia. Several sherds of vessels with kneeformed handles have been excavated on sites in the Drava valley that can be dated to the Ha A period: Kalnik–Igrišče I. ( Vrdoljak 1994: T. 33. 3.), Rogoza ( Črešnar 2010: Pl. 3. 9., Pl. 7. 11., Pl. 8. 9., Pl.17. 10, 14.), Gaćište–Lanica ( Pavišić 1992: Taf. 6. 1.), and Josipovac–Punitovački ( Šimić 2011: 222.). Besides the 5 vessels with knee-formed handles from Majs, only 3 further examples of the type can be found amongst the Late Bronze Age assemblages 7 Říhovský 1982: Taf. 17. 1., Taf. 20. 5., Taf. 21. 10., Taf. 22.7. 8 e.g. Budapest–Békásmegyer ( Kalicz-Schreiber et al. 2010: Taf. 68. 2., Taf. 124. 4., Taf. 135. 2.) , Tököl ( Patek 1958: 416–417, 12. kép 8., 14. kép 3., 16. kép 4., 17. kép 5.), Dorog ( Patek 1968: Taf.
