Pécs, 2017 Settlement of the Early Urnfield period at Majs– Borza-major (Southern Transdanubia, Hungary) Viktor Wéber e-mail: viktorwber@gmail.com Kulcsszavak : Késő bronzkor, urnamezős időszak, település, Dél-Dunántúl, könyökös kiképzésű fülek Keywords : Late Bronze Age, Urnfield period, settlement, Southern Transdanubia, knee-formed handles Abstract : ?e study primarily focuses on the assemblage from 2 features, a completely and a partially excavated pit, belonging to a Late Bronze Age settlement excavated in 1966, during the research of the battlefield of Mohács. ?e excavated assemblage can be dated to the Early Urnfield period and shows similarities not only with the Transdanu­bian, but also with the Croatian and Slovenian assemblages of the same period. Several sherds from cups with rim-exceeding, knee-formed handles are known from the site, a characteristic handle type of the Western Balkan in the same period. Introduction In the 1960’s, as part of the research of the battlefield of Mohács (Baranya County), L. Papp found traces of a Late Bronze Age settlement and cemetery. One feature, a pit, was excavated completely, and another one partially during 1966. In the vicinity of the settlement traces, three graves were excavated and some pottery sherds and ashes – possibly indicating another burial – were also found on the surface a?er ploughing. ?e Urnfield period sites of Majs (Baranya County) haven’t been properly studied since their discovery, they were only briefly mentioned in some monographic studies ( Maráz 1979, Kőszegi 1988, Metzner-Nebesick 2002).
