86 A Janus Pannonius Múzeum Évkönyve (2015) Archaeological excavations on the Sopianae square, Pécs. Summary report Gergely Kovaliczky Four times between 1972-2002 archaeological excavations were from the south part of the historical Pécs. The results of the excavations require a summary of those. First time there was a residental district with timber framed huts, sleeper beam houses and pit-houses in the last third of the 1 century. In the first part of the 2 century this area changed from residental district to industrial area, where metallurgy and pottery making activities were keep going. The barbar invasion of the marcomann wars was totally destroyed this industrial area in 168-169. The area rebuild with new stone buildings (residential buildings, beneficiarian cult house) at the turning point of the 2-3 century connected with the prosperity of the Severian age. The roxolan attack at 260 was the end for this second period. After this attack a light structure, wall painting house constructed on the earlier ruins of the settlement. The turning point of 3-4 century Sopianae got the title ’’center of the territory (Valeria)” and the view of the town had been changed totally. The north part of the square was an east west direction road covered with sand and gravel. In the south part planishing and landscaping showed up. The evacuation of Sopianae was the end for this fourth period around 420.
