A gomba- és növénygyűjtemény A gombákat újabban a növény- és állatvilág mellett az élőlények harmadik, önálló csoportjának tekintik több, a másik kettőtől lényegében különböző jellegzetességük miatt. Ezeknek az élőlényeknek általában csak a szaporodó szerveit (kalapos gombák: "a gomba") láthatjuk szabad szemmel, mert a többi jóval nagyobb terjedelmű részük fonalak formájában a talajban rejtőzik. A gombafajok jelentős része csak mikroszkóppal látható, illetve tanulmányozható, ezek az ún. "mikrogombák".
