Ennek okát a folyamatosan növekvő feladatokban, valamint a múzeumi szolgáltatás iránti érdeklődés és igény fokozódásában látjuk. Ugyanakkor bizonyos tárgyi adottságok kényszerítő hatása érvényesült. " 42 A két új állandó kiállítás - A Mecsek környéke és természeti képe, ill. Tompa Kálmán emlékkönyvtár (népi kerámia és textil) - mellett 29 időszaki és négy külföldi kiállítás is készült a múzeum szakembereinek rendezésében. Több évi egymillió fölötti éves látogatószám után 1982-ben 927.946 fő kereste le a pécsi, baranyai kiállításokat. A költségvetési helyzet főbb mutatói között először találkozunk a bevételi előirányzat kiemelésével, 833.000 Ft! Költségvetési előirányzat: 12.500.000 Ft, szakmai feladatokra fordított hitel: 4.500.000 Ft. Felújításokra, karbantartásokra: hétmillió Ft, bérköltségek: 4.616.000 Ft. 43 1983-ban novemberében a nyugdíjba vonult Hárs Évát követően - közművelődési szakembert neveztek ki, Újvári Jenő történelem-földrajz szakos tanár személyében megyei múzeumigazgatónak.
