Following Csontváry's track in the Highlands Lajos ZOMBORI Some 15 years ago the author made three trips to the highlands of Hungary, in other words Upper Northern Hungary prior to 1920. This part today is Slovakia. The aim was to find out what the people living there might know about Csontváry, today. One of the localities was Igló (SpiSská Nova Ves), where Csontváry was an assistant chemist in the local pharmacy. Though many private and official persons were questioned in 1981 hardly anyone knew anything about our great Hungarian painter. He other locality, Gács (HaliC) was visited twice in two consecutive years: 1981 and 1982. Is was staggering to find that the majoriity of the inhabitants knew nothing about the old pharmacy established by Csontváry. The house (Fig. 2.) has nothing on its walls, not even a small commemorative tablet to indicate that Csontváry worked there for ten long years to provide him with enough money for travelling and buying expensive Dutch artist s canvas and oil-paints. The owners of the house said next to nothing about Csontváry, so the author had to be sufficed with the history of the house and meagre details of stories regarding some famous paintings, which might hopefully be incorporated at a later date in some monographic work.
