44 FÜLEP FERENC viously postdating the frescoes into which they were bored and which they considerably damaged, were used for holding timbers under a floor of planks. This structure may have been part of the essential conditions for the people in hiding. Also attached to the W face of the mausoleum were pile dwellings which, according to the recovered finds, can be as­sociated with the 9th-10th century Avar population. In all probability the ruined mausoleum witnessed the Magyar Conquest, and also the construction of the similarly orientated Cathedral N of it 62 . The re­construction and opening of the Late Roman - Old Christian mausoleum will definitely addaa gem to the plenty of precious monuments in the town of Sopia­nae-Pécs.
