The present contribution gives a list of animal names depicted in the paintings and drawings of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, one of the greatest Hungarian painters having lived at the turn of the 20th century. The huge mass of literature that accumulated over the 80 years proves that the opinion of the critics greatly varied: many ridiculed him, some remained indifferent, and only a few spoke with appreciation. The emotion behind these rooted in misunderstanding, perhaps envy and only the enlightened paid tribute. But whichever opinion is true each and every one of them is but the view of one person and as such is undoubtedly charged with prejudice. However, there are other possible approaches to Csontváry's work that exclude prejudice, and that is for example to scientifically identify his depicted animals. This I believe is an integral part of a better knowledge of Csontváry's work. And this is all the more justified since in some cases even in the titles of paintings somehow wrong animal names crept in. This study comprises two parts. The first one lists the paintings and drawings with serial numbers given by L. Németh (as figured in his monograph deÁzsiai bivaly - Házibivaly Bival, bivaly, ári, arni, indiai bivaly, vízibivaly. V. In brackets the numbers indicate the number of specimens depicted in the respective painting or drawing. The second part of the study is a list of animals following a systematic order. After the serial number the modern scientific name is given followed by a Latin name used at about the turn of the century. Underneath these two names a list of synonyms and combinations follows. A new paragraph is opened by the modern Hungarian name followed in turn by the name used some eighty years ago. This again is closed with all the known Hungarian synonyms. Finally, for cross reference purposes those titles of painting and drawing are listed in which that particular animal is represented. The figure is a silhouette of the painting „Pillangók" (Butterflies). It has been prepared in order to easily find the proper name for each butterfly species.
