Régészet - Vörös, István: Description of the Animal Bones from the Early Bronze Age Settlement at Szava

DESCRIPTION OF THE ANIMAL BONES FROM THE EARLY BRONZE AGE SETTLEMENT AT SZAVA ISTVÁN VÖRÖS Roe deer — sin. metatarsus distalis spec. The Early Bronze Age settlement at Szava (excavated by I. Ecsedy in 1975 and 1976) belongs to the Somogyvár—Vinkovci culture. 1 The pits contained archaeological and osteological material consisting of the bone-remains of domestic and wild animals. 2 The most part of the animal bones came from the pits 7—8, 16, 18—20, 23, 28, 30—31. Only a few bones were found in the disturbed level above the pits (blocks 3, 8, 10, upper level). The total number of animal bones recovered is 632. The anatomical classificition and the species identification was possible in 511 cases (80,85% of the total number). The bone samples represent the following domestic animals: frontosus type cattle (Bos taurus frontosus Nilsson), sheep (Ovis aries L.), pig (Sus scrofa L. f. domestica Gray). Wild animals: red deer (Cervus elaphus L.), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.), East-European type of wild swine (Sus scrofa attila Thomas), brown hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas). Beside the mammalian bones there was only one fish in the material recovered (Pisces sp. ind). The great number of the unclassifiable cortical bone fragments (121 specimens, i. e. 19,15%) and the traces of the sharp instruments on them favor the conclusion that they were food refuse — except the antlers of Cervidae.
