Régészet - Ecsedy István: Excavations at Lánycsók in 1976 (Preliminary Report)

120 ISTVÁN ECSEDY Fig. 1. Lánycsók — Égettmalom. The situation of the site. 1. kép. Lánycsók — Égettmalom. A lelőhely helyzete. well. Among the chance finds of unknown origin there is an undecorated pot with two handles representing the type I. of the Balaton group (PI. IV. I.) 3 This complete vessel must have been in a grave destroyed before the rescue excavation. In 1975 the abrupt walls of the trench dug through the site have been transformed to slopes and further remains have been destroyed in the central part of the site without letting the museum know first. We conducted a surface exploration the site in April 1976 and we have come to the opinion that a controll-excavation might result in the saving of the early neolithic Starcevo material which had been poorly known in WesternHungary before and in the clearing of the chronology of the site. The work was carried on in summer of 1976. The finds of eleven different cultures (i. e. periods) came to light on the excavation area. 3 N. Kalicz: Über die chronologische Stellung der Balaton-Gruppe in Ungarn, in: Symposium über die Entstehung und Chronologie der Badener Kultur. Bratislava 1973. 133., Abb. 1/6—7. The excavation^ (directed by N. Kalicz and I. Ecsedy) We have explored a partly undisturbed territory of a narrow strap-like shape extending in East —West direction on the edge of the southern slope of the above mentioned trench. The excavation was restricted to an area about 500 m 2 in extension. The cultivated layer of the humus and the subhumus yielded relatively few finds. The major part of the uncovered material was found in the settlement remains (pits and hearts) observed in a depht of 0,50—0,60 m. These objects were numbered from 1 to 33 according to the sequence they had been found in. 1. Pit. Early Neolithic, Starcevo culture. It was uncovered in the upper part of the slope, north from the excavation-trench. The upper part of it's deposit was annihilated by the earthwork, only the lower part remained. 4 We are indebted to B. Maráz and P. Raczky for their help in the excavation-work. The plans are drawn by K. Szijártó and P. Krasznai. The field photos were made by I. Ecsedy, the other ones by K. Nádor.
