IVÁNDÁRDA—„FÖLDBÁNYA" (Clay-pit) Site and circumstances of discovery In 1970, based on the information given by the switchboard operator József Szabó, a rescue-excavation was carried out by the author in a claypit situated north of the village Ivánvárda. It could be established that the present surface of the large-extended pit had been deeply disturbed and a large number of skeletons, perhapes all the graves but one, had been destroyed before the excavation started. Since the finds have no characteristic features, no certain date can be assigned to them on typological grounds. The only grave salvaged grave was that situated in the axis of dam built across the brook, 51,1. m eastwards of spill-way. Description of grave Grave 1 (Fig. 18. B) O: 48'; D: about 80 cm (approximae owing to the disturbed surface of the ground); L: —; W: 50 cm; L. of the skeleton: 148 cm. Skeleton in extended supine position, skull tilted to the right side. The left forearm lay beside the left ilium, the right one was missing as it had been disturbed by dirring previous to the excavation. Single-edged, straight iron knife (L: 8.5 cm) on the sternum. Rectangular iron buckle (1) above the pelvis. Fragment of an iron ring (2) on the same find-spot. Deposition Janus Pannonius Museum, under Inv. nos. KESZŰ—„GYÓDI BEKÖTŐÜT" (APPROACH-ROAD TO GYÓD) Site and circumstances of discovery After the site had been reported by Ferenc Müller, site architect of the „Magas és Mélyépítő Vállalat" in Pécs, a rescue excavation was carried out by the author from 22nd to 23rd June in 1971. Before the site was reported a large number of graves of a Late Avar period cemetery had been destroyed by mechanical excavators during the construction of the approach-road leading to Gyód. According to the information given by the construction workers, the graves which had been destroyed appeared close to each in an area 42 metres in length and wide as the road. The site was on the area covered by the approach-road leading towards Gyód, 138—180 m farther from on the junction of the roads leading towards Gyód and Keszű. Description of graves Grave 1 (Fig. 18.
