Néprajztudomány - Zentai, János: Ormánság nyugati határa és belső tagolódása

The western boundary and the inner partioning of Ormánság J. ZENTAI To delimiting of ethnic groups it was made some attempts many times and in many ways. One of the ways of delimitation is the investigation of marital connections. The determining of eastern boundary of the Ormánság area was completed by the author earlier by help of this method (Yearbook of the JPM 1966). As a control of investigation carried out on this basis he made later other ethnographical comparisons on a wider landstripe, along the boundary fixed by the iriethöd above. The different ethnographical phenomena - on the field of material and spiritual culture equally - as well as the knowledge of the inhabitants of villages examined closely, resulted exactly the same setting of boundary line. This ethnic group forms therefore really an endogam unity. As the author is convinced of the accurancy of using up this research method, he was going on with the delimiting of the ethnic group in Ormánság westward and toward other directions too. Comparing the result here with other ethnographical researches, the whole boundary of this ethnic group was drawn up at last. Going on this trail now he continued his investigation further. Within the ethnic group in Ormánság it was namely since a long time presumed an existence of two from one another fairly different sub-groups. Some attempts was made by the author, whether the boundary between the sub-groups could be drawn by help of marital connections. On this basis it would be a rational conclusion that the whole group should be am endogam unity and marriages would happen within these settlements in a fairly equal proportion from all directions. As this area is effective only a narrow landstripe, this fact is practically hard to observe in north" ahd south direction, in the eastern and western direction however it is more effectiv. Moreover the existence of these two sub-groups shows itself in the eastern and western direction too. If the spreading of tendency of making marriages would be equal, the eastern- western dividing line would fairly coincide with the geographical one. On the basis of the analysis of data, the reality is not that, the delimiting line extends far more eastward from this. During a newer control research turned up some kind of geographical naming out of the folk tradition and the delimiting idea connected to this, coincides exactly with the line concluded by the marital connections. The tradition, having surely a distant historical background, is here similarly identic with the result given by marital connections.
