DANKÓ The author believes the markets and fairs to be the most suitable sites for ethnographical observations. He therefore considers their exploration to be more successful by means of ethnographical methods than with historical research. Although Pécs was an important market place, the history and ethnography of its markets were not duly investigated. Prior to the spreading of up-todate means of communication, Pécs was situated next to, and at the crossing of, highly important thoroughfares, and at the meeting point of various regional units. Up to that time, the products of the Northern Balkans. Northern Italy, Lower Austria and Southern Hungary were exchanged at the fairs and markets of Pécs. In a comprehensive form, the author reviews the sites, dates, goods and merchants of the fairs and markets and publishes three municipal statutes elucidating several questions of the Pécs fairs.
