Cumania 28. Mihály Mándics pp. 305-320 "MY GREATEST TASK IS TO SERVE MY HOMELAND" I was born in Csávoly, where I still live. In this village four vernacular cultures live together: Hungarian, German, Bunjevci-Croatian and of those Hungarians who were expelled from the territory of today Slovakia. When speaking about my career I tried to sketch my personal story from the beginnings as a farmer's child until where I am today. This is a confession and statement. This is who I am: what I had been born into, what I had been, what I had lived through, what I had studied. I aimed at sharing my research in my books and papers. My most important focus was the investigation of the Bunjevaci of Hungary, and the service of my homeland as a teacher, local historian and a public figure. In this paper I gave a full description of my life, my ethnographical studies and collection, and my work as local historian.
