Romsics Imre Imre Romsics REGISTER OF WORLD WAR II VICTIMS IN KALOCSA There were several motives for the complilation of a register of World War II victims in Kalocsa. There has been a debate for many years over the establishment of a war memorial in Kalocsa, on which names of fallen soldiers would be represented. Because the movers and shakers of this case emphasized not the registration of victims but the establishment of a memorial, I started the registration work in the spring of 2007 with the intention to close the debate which had been going on for two decades. This study listed 632 people, thus adding 209 to the number of known victims of the war and detailed their identity. If we deduct the non-residents of Kalocsa from the result of the research, then the number of known victims in Kalocsa will increase by 109 people. Beside the residents of Kalocsa the study draws attention to other people who died within the administrative area of Kalocsa and perhaps were buried there. As a result, other people whose place of death had sofar been unknown came to light and whose families could until then not have possibly hoped to discover the place of death of the deceased family member. There are separate tables for each of the following: the residents of Kalocsa, the soldiers, the Jewish victims, the non-resident soldiers in Kalocsa, other deaths in connection with the war, and finally German and Russian soldiers who died in Kalocsa are also included. Each table contains the person's name, place of birth, age - where possible the exact date of birth - religion, names of the parents and the spouse, residence, date and place of death, as well as the place and date of burial. In the notes section there is a brief reference to the circumstances of the death and - where possible - the military regiment. From the 632 persons who are on the register, 213 were military residents in Kalocsa, 313 persons were Jewish in Kalocsa, 79 persons in the military were not resident in Kalocsa, 9 persons were Russian and German soldiers and finally 18 persons were other war-related deaths. 292
