A bor a hajósi sváb hagyományos népéletben (20. század első fele) Zsuzsanna Bereznai - Mária Schön THE ROLE OF WINE IN TRADITIONAL SCHWAB1AN FOLK LIFE (FIRST HALF OF THE 20™ CENTURY) The Archbishop of Kalocsa ordered the Schwabian peasants - who were resettled in the Hajos region on his estate in the 18th century - to grow grapes. According to traditions handed down by word of mouth, the German immigrant families brought some grapevines in spite of a ban, since a significant proportion of them came from the area of Lake Constance, which was a major wine-growing area. A smaller number of settlers also came to Hajos from the Rhine region, famous for its grape- and wine culture. The grape played an important role on the peasant farms of Hajós so these areas were carefully cultivated. The main income of a family came from the sale of wine. If poor peasants became housemaids, they spent their annual earnings purchasing part of a vineyard, and clothing. The vineyards were located on the sandy high banks in Hajós, whereas the village itself lay on a floodplain until the flood-protection was built. Kadarka was the most common grape variety until the middle of the 20th century. The study presents the annual grape production schedule, the customs and beliefs relating to the work processes and the characteristics of folk viticulture. During the description of wine-cellar culture, the authors describe the development and character of the local Wine-Cellar Village, the social institutions of the wine-cellar neighborhood and the festive days of the wine-cellars (drinking wine and talking in the cellar). The culture of wine consumption - in the chapter on wine and entertainment - the traditional customs of everyday and special occasions form the crux of the study. At the end of the study the phrases and proverbs in connection with the wine, the folk tales and songs about the grape, wine and wine-cellars come to life. 179
