People fished in the Danube, in Lake Szelíd that belonged to the town, and according to some archives from the 19th—20th century, they also fished in large and small Stillwater, quarries and flood plains located in the interior and exterior areas of the town. Fisheries included water meadows, reeds and lowland areas as well in Szentkirály and Őrjeg, a bit further from the Dunapataj fields. The representative body of the owner of the fields, Dunapataj was dealing with hiring out fisheries and emerging problems. Sparse data shows that in the early 20th century the town’s most powerful economic organization, the Grazing Association, also leased areas suitable for fishing in Szentkirály and Orjeg. The documents concerning the rentals and the disputes provide information on thirdrate water fishing in Dunapataj and its role in the town. The documents reveal that these small waters had economic value for the owner and it is also apparent that they played a major role in local people’s life. [Translated by Andrea Vén] 50
