couid be located rampart (Svodín; Némejcová- Pavúková 1995, 202-207). The inner area of rondels is usually unbuilt. Buildings can be found here only occasionally (Fig.3:2; Bucany, Zlkovce). Possibilities of interpretation Scientists believe, that circular enclosures were specific facilities with cult and social function, cult and assembly centres, monumental places or village churches, central places, temples of Sun or calendar facilities. There is also an opinion, that rondels were corrals for cattle. Many large rondels with massive ditches, gateways and monumental ramparts with palisades are considered to be fortifications (Becker 1996, 121; Karlovskÿ — Pavúk 2002, 113; Lüning 1983-1984, 17; Némejcová-Pavúková 1995, 213- 214; Pavlù 1983-1984, 80; Pavúk - Karlovskÿ 2004, 211-212; Pertlwieser 2001; Petrasch 1990, 518; Podborskÿ 1988, 275; Ruttkay 1983-1984, 232). Each of these explanations have their stronger and weaker spots. To this also contributes a fact, that circular enclosures were rarely excavated and studied in context of surrounding settlement, with which they constructed an architectural, economic and social entity (Karlovskÿ — Pavúk 2002, 113). Many times a cultic nature of rondels is deduced from much younger circular facilities like Avebury Zlkovce.
