ie Gründung der Bajaer Bildergalerie im Jahre 1936 bedeutete die Ausbildung einer einmaligen lebenden Kunstsammlung im Ungarischen Museumswesen der dreißiger Jahre. Die praktische Abwicklung ist auch kurios, fast ohne Vergleiche in der ungarischen Museumsgeschichte, denn sie kam als Ergebnis einer umfassenden Sammlungsarbeit zustande, deren Beweger in der Hauptstadt Imre Oltványi (Artinger) und in Baja Ferenc Miskolczy waren. Der aus Baja stammende Imre Oltványi (1893- 1963), Direktor der Budapester Hypotheken- und Kreditbank, war ein gut vorbereiteter, gebildeter, viel und in mehreren Sprachen lesender-schreibender Bürger. Die Kunst betrachtete er als eine Feier, als Feier der Seele, das geeigneteste Mittel die Erholung zu verschönern und harmonisch zu gestalten. Ein Mittel, was den Mensch aus dem alltäglichen Treiben erhebt. Oltványi beantwortet die Frage, wozu dient die Kunst, wie folgt: „Was Du von der Kunst erwarten kannst, ist das schönere Abbild des Lebens". Die dynamische Persönlichkeit von Oltványi, seine einmalige Organisationsfähigkeit, sein Talent war sehr nützlich in der seltsamen Vorbereitungs- und Organisationsarbeit, die im Jahre 1936 letztendlich zur Gründung, beziehungsweise Öffnung des Bajaer Museums führte. Oltványi hatte im Jahre 1935 Baja besucht und den Kunstmaler Ferenc Miskolczy getroffen. Auf Anregung von Miskolczy hat er den Bürgermeister Dr. Ferenc Borbíró aufgesucht und ihm versprochen, für die Stadt eine Sammlung von mindestens 30-40 Bildern aus der zeitgenössischen Kunstmalerei (1930-er Jahren) kostenlos zukommen zu lassen. In der Sammlung waren Arbeiten von Künstlern, wie Imre Amos, Robert Berény, Géza Bornemisza, Tibor Boromisza, József Egry, István Farkas, Gyula Hincz, János Krnetty, Pál Molnár C., Jenő Paizs- Goebel, Vilmos Perlrott-Csaba, József Rippl-Rónai, Armand Schönberger enthalten. Die bildkünstlerische Sammlung des Museums István Türr entstand nach einer Sammlungsarbeit von Oltványi und Ferenc Miskolczy aus Gaben von Künstlern, Kunstsammlern, städtischen und Landesanstalten, und erreichte auch deshalb eine so breite Palette, die es fertig brachte das entscheidende Gesamtbild der bildenden Kunst der 1930-er Jahre in Ungarn in gültigem und entsprechendem kunsthistorischen Verhältnis und Authentizität vorzustellen. he Picture Gallery of Baja was founded in 1936. At that time it boasted of a unique collection of its kind. Not only the realization of a project like this was uncommon in the 1930s, but the creation of the Gallery of nationwide significance was also effected in an unusual way. Both the theoretical basis and the way of setting up the collection were special owing to two extraordinary people: Imre Oltványi- Ártinger and Ferenc Miskolczy. Imre Oltványi-Ártinger (1893-1963), a native of Baja, was then living in the capital of Hungary. He was both a bank manager, art critic and philosopher, editor of the journal Magyar Művészet (Hungarian Art). This highly educated person, fluent in several languages, considered enjoying art the faultless way of having a rest, that is, the holiday celebration of the soul. In answering the question, "What is the function of art?", Oltványi-Ártinger states, "All we can expect from art is a most beautiful reflection of life". Oltványi's dynamic personality, his unusual talent and organising ability were well made use of in the preparatory work that eventually resulted in the creation and the opening of the Gallery in Baja in 1936. It was in 1935 that in Baja Oltványi first met Ferenc Miskolczy, the artist. The latter organised a visit of his to Dr. Ferenc Borbíró, the mayor of the town. Oltványi offered the community of Baja a collection of 30-40 first class pieces of contemporary art, as a present, if they could supply an appropriate building. This is how paintings by Imre Ámos, Róbert Berény, Géza Bornemisza, Tibor Bornemisza, József Egry, István Farkas, Gyula Hincz, János Krnetty, Pál Molnár C., Jenő Paizs-Goebel, Vilmos Perlrott-Csaba, József Rippl-Rónai, and Armand Schönberger arrived in Baja. Thus, as a result of the co-operation of Oltványi and Miskolczy, the collection of fine art of the István Türr Museum was born. The artists themselves, art collectors, the municipality and other institutions of Baja, as well as private persons contributed to the high quality collection of the Gallery. The István Türr Museum of Baja has been following Oltványi's footsteps ever since. In consciously enlarging the collection, they have been continuing the same tradition. As a result, the Gallery offers an ever richer cross section of 20th century Hungarian fine art.
