FERENC MISKOLCZY THE MUSEUM ESTABLISHING PAINTER OF BAJA From the depths of Hungarian history of art a name or another shows up, some stories that were resting in the shadow, paintings orgraphics, creating the facility that some works which were hidden before, can fit into the thesislike statements of evaluations that were considered unalterable before. The luckiest ones amongst the forgotten contemporary artists can hear shorter or longer evaluations about themselves during their life, even if these are often coming out of the author's strongly subjective feelings. The life-work of Ferenc Miskolczy can also attribute a similar fate to itself. The literature about him, even in Baja is only known peripherally. It only contains three catalogs in prologues, three short career reviews and a collection of an explorer of local history. Unfairly few. As Ferenc Miskolczy whose presence in the Hungarian art life from 1918-1930 , froml930 until his death could be felt continously near by the city of Baja, can be evaluated and has a significance in history of museum, culture and in art alike. Ferenc Miskolczy was not born in Baja. He was born in Vác in 1899. He was raised in good treatment by his father who was a registrary, a famous beekeeper and a writer, also called Ferenc Miskolczy and his mother Ilona Nagy- Czirok. The Miskolczy family moved to Baja following the birth of their four children. So Ferenc Miskolczy spent his student years in Baja, where he attended the Cistercian Main High School of Baja between 1910-1914. As a soldier and private student he did a military school living exam in April 1918. Then in October of the same year he disarmed and succesfully got into the Academy of Fine Arts, where he became the student of Ede Ballá, Bertalan Pór and István Réti. After finishing the academy he settled down in Baja for the request of his parents in 1922. Following the hard years after World War I. he felt great in the Bácska region. Not only personally but together with his paint-brush and pastel chalk he wandered the region of Bácska and Sárköz. Considering the whole life work (besides the Spanish-era) the most valueable, postimpressionist works were made during those days in Jánoshalma, Ocsény and Baja. In the early artistic period between 1918-1924 he created many of his works which can be related to the art of Nagybánya and they already show the trademark style of Miskolczy. The homogeneous, clean coloured building from big painting spots results in an organic, unified effect. He explores his own way in naturalistic view-painting as well as in the building in of neo-elements in Nagybánya. Although he considered his settleing down in Baja final, he did not broke away from the 45
