Merk Zsuzsa - Bálint Attila: Baja is town for 300 years - A Bajai Türr István Múzeum kiadványai 27. (Baja, 1999)

Prince Antal Grassalkovich died in 1841 without an heir. Baja first fell into the hands of the Szentgyörgyi Horváth family, then became the property of Károly Viczay, who sold the estate to Felix Zichy-Ferraris in 1856. During the revolution of 1848-49, the city was not one of the strategically important venues of military activities. However, Baja contributed two important personalities to the history of Hungarian and European revolutions. Lázár Mészáros was the minister of defense of the first independent national government of Hungary. István Türr, another son of the city, fought for the unification of Italy on the side of Garibaldi. István Türr did not participate in the Hungarian freedom fight, but played an important role after the treaty of 1867 in revitalizing the economy of Bácska. (He also started the building of the Panama Channel and of the Channel of Corinth.) The city became independent in 1862 when it redeemed its freedom by paying 722,000 to the Zichy family. In 1873, the city was granted municipal rights. The city's first mayor was Mór Hauser, who was of Jewish descent. If a continuously changing city can have an atmosphere, Baja's, because of its diverse ethnic and religious composition, was an atmosphere of tolerance.
