THE INTERRUPTED PROPHECY

On these works the musical inspirations, the "visual soundings", that are so central in Lantos's oeuvre, are showing up such as the early examples of KÉP-SZER0, and for instance the 1970 Written Board (page 9). This is no accident as his art educational innovations, to be developed together with his colleague and later wife Mária Apagyi pianist and music teacher, commence in 1968 i.e. at the beginning of his enamel period. Hence these pieces are important documents of this new programme as well. Certain 'enamel drawings', in spite of the different tools used, are also sketches to Lantos's big sized mural works, such as the 1967 Red-Black Drawing and the 1968 Night (colorplates 7-8], therefore, there is a relation between the two main groups of enamel works. The other group of enamel works is know by many more, partly because a much more significant amount of works belong to that category, but also due to the more characteristically Lantosean use of colours and forms that also are more closely related to Lantos's works in other genres. Although it may seem to be slightly didactical but this group of mural, and public space related, works could further be divided into four sub-groups. The works of the first sub-group are the so-called "enamel walls''6 7 which were mainly made between 1 967 and 1971 primarily in the city of Pécs. These are as follows: the corridor of the Pécs City Library [1967]; the club of the Pushkin House of Culture (1968, colorplates 9-10]; the staircase of the Sándor Doktor House of Culture [1968]; the Art High-school (1968, color- plate 11]; the Bóbita Puppet Theater (1970, colorplate 12]; the Information Office (1971) and finally the stage background of the Lajos Kossuth University in the city of Debrecen [1975]. Due to its characteristics, although it is a work in an outside space, we could also list here the large sized enamel composition, of 1968, on the faqade of the main building of the Bonyhád Enamel Factory (colorplate 13). The second sub-group contains Lantos's "enamel friezes" that, as compared to the "enamel walls", were made somewhat later, mainly between 1969 and I 972. This group contains the following friezes: DÉDÁSZ, Pécs (1969, colorplates 17-2 1), kindergarten, Kaposvár (1 970, colorplate 22), garden city kindergarten in Pécs (1971, colorplates 24-25], garden city nursery in Pécs (1971, colorplates 26-27] and the kindergarten in Székesfehérvár 6. The author suggests to use the word “enamel” instead of “fired enamel”. 22
