THE INTERRUPTED PROPHECY

Térelemtanulmány 1971, zománcozott acéllemez 45x 45 cm (tanulmányfotó) One of the main groups, that is not well-known neither for the public nor for the trade, is characterized by the spontaneous and fast recording of the best moments of intellect by an appropriate, graffiti-like 'scratching' technique done with ease. What is common here with the other group is the searching for the essence of nature by modelling and systemic mapping. However, in here inspiration and intuitive conjecture dominate as opposed to the more time-consuming and painstaking methods. Spontaneity on these works is further emphasized by the exact recording of times before firing (e.g. “At quarter to midnight, August 13, 1969"). The late hours hint, that later was confirmed by the artist, that the late night workshop discussions at bone fire inspired him to make these works. On the works of this group made in 1967 one could still see the technical experimenting and the process of getting acquainted with enamel, see for instance the two variations of the Under/Above Horizon (colorplate 1], while the more philosophical and superb pieces are made in 1969, such as the Circular+Brush Trace and the Red Text [colorplate 5), or later. The scratched hand-written texts play a very important role in several works of this group; for example in the 1969 Circular + Spritzer the following text is seen: "half-way turns everything back, therefore, it could be used as a proof against itself only" (colorplate 4], in certain cases the text is expanded with musical notes, arrows and simple symbols that are often in the black base of the enamelled steei-plate, such as the 1971 Squirrel (colorplate 6). 21
