Erzsébet Fóthi - Zsolt Bemert Anthropological study of the Solt-Tételhegy cemetery An Árpádian Age church and cemetery were partially excavated between 2007 and 2009 as part of the research project led by József Szentpéteri. The osteological remains of 125 individuals have been recovered so far. Based on the size and form of the skulls, the population can be characterised by a duality: the majority of the population was dolichocranic, with a long, narrow and moderately high brain case, a tall, thin face, high orbits and a moderately narrow nose. Taxonomically, the most common forms are the Nordic and the Mediterranean types. 77% of the examined skulls can be assigned to these groups; they were buried outside the church. A smaller number of individuals were hyperbrachycranic, characterised by a short, very wide brain case, a narrow forehead, a narrow face, very high orbits and a very narrow nose. Taxonomically, this group is Dinarian. They were buried inside the church. A Penrose distance analysis was employed for calculating the anthropological analogies of the population buried at Solt-Tételhegy. An extraordinary degree of resemblance emerged: of the 500 samples included in the analysis, 46 proved similar on a very close (99%) level of significance. The Solt-Tételhegy population shares the greatest similarities with the populations of Mikulcice and other Moravian samples as well as the Carolingian era burials from the western fringes of the Carpathian Basin. At the same time, the Solt-Tételhegy sample stands very far from the samples of the ancient Hungarians of the Conquest period. Accordingly, the population laid to rest in the Árpádian Age cemetery at Solt-Tételhegy cannot be regarded as descendants of the ancient Hungarians of the Conquest period.
