Andrea Lantos A settlement of the Scythian Age in the vicinity of Dunavecse Between July 28 t h - December 15 t h 2004, and April 5 t h - August 20 t h 2005 we conducted rescue excavation in the Dunavecse section of Motorway M8, at the site Dunavecse-Kovacsos-dűlő (Bács-Kiskun County). The site is situated SE of the town, at the left bank of the Danube, some kilometres from the riverbed. According to the field survey and aerial photos, the Sarmatian and Iron Age site was situated at NW-SE oriented hills, 96-97 m high above the sea level and was several hectares large (fig 1). In the course of the excavation we found material of several archaeological ages: beside the Scythian Age settlement in question, a Sarmatian settlement and two Early Avarian graves were unearthed at the 23,000-sq.m large territory. Among the 861 features, 52 belonged to the Iron Age, 752 to Sarmatians, 2 to Avarian Age and 7 to the modern era. There were also 62 features of unknown age unearthed; most of them pits without find material. A large number - 27 - of the 52 Iron Age features was represented by houses and subterranean huts. On the territory lying between the houses we excavated 21 Iron Age pits, 2 ditches and 2 post-holes belonging to the houses. It seems to us that at the NW-SE directed hill mainly small, iurta shaped huts were built that did not form any regular order. There were several types of houses. Most of them were oval huts deepening towards the centre (17), in fewer cases we recorded larger rectangular houses with rounded corners (10) (fig. 2-4). Features of the settlements, but mainly the houses gave very rich find material. In the course of excavation a large number of pottery and animal bones were found. Among the fine bowls, cups also wheel-made variants appeared. At the same time we found a lot of coarse pottery, usually with ribbon decoration under the rims. (fig. 7-9). Spindle whorls were found in large quantity, showing a great variety in shapes and decorations (fig. 10). Judging from the pottery, the site of Dunavecse-Kovacsos dűlő can be dated to the end of the 6 , h century. This is supported by the appearance of wheel-made vessels and the absence of either earlier (pre-Scythian) or later (Celtic) material. As analogies we can use the material of the following sites of the Great Hungarian Plain, belonging to the Late Hallstatt - Early La Tène Age: Hódmezővásárhely-Fehértó (PÁRDUCZ 1945), Nyíregyháza-Manda-bokor (ISTVÁNOVITS 1997), Szolnok-Zagyvapart (CSEH 2001),Tiszaigar (CSEH-KRIVECZKY 2001). ] 36
