BY MRS. ANDRÁSNÉ JENEY THE ARCHIVES OF CENTRAL STATISTICAL OFFICE T The Archives of Central Statistical Office were set up as statistical professional archives by a presidential decree in 1975 derived from the law of the archives of 1969. The Act no. XLVI of 1993; about statistics and the Act no. LXVI of 1995; about public documents and public archives and the plea of defence of private archives strengthened the legal status by names. For over quarter of a century the archives has collected the documents of enduring value from the organizations that belonged or still belong to the Office and was or is still subordinated to it. It took over the documents, statistical charts, analyses of historic value into its holdings and also the documents of prominent figures or experts in the science of statistics and in everyday life. It holds more than 9500 linear metres of systematically arranged documents in its stock at present, most of which are available for the researchers. It also publishes the Repertory, which is a guide about the documents to assist in archival research. One of the most important units of the surviving document collection of historic value is the collection of the files registering the work of register-book committee of the National Communities. The task of the Committee founded in 1898 was to state official and final names of the settlements in 63 counties by examining and maintaining them in a register bookof the changes in names. The data about the communities which was based on demographic changes from 1900 to 1940 is also a great value, and also contains detailed statistics about the cause of death.
