Cornel Sigmirean The Catholic Network — Romanian Students from Transylvania at European Universities The actual history of the European universities attendance by the Romanians from Transylvania started in the 18th century as a direct outcome of the Orthodox Romanians’ religious union with the Church of Rome and the birth of the Greek-Catholic Church. The phenomenon progressed in the conditions of Austria’s expansion to the East (Reconquista), which, according to Pierre Chaunu, led to the residing of Europe through its passage from the “Little” to the “Large” Europe1. Taking into consideration the name criterion, the first Romanian with university studies was Johannes Wolahus of Welenis (of Beius), who studied in 1424 at the University of Vienna2. Furthermore, taking into consideration the ethnic origin, we can also mention Nicolaus Olahus, who studied in Paris in the first half of the 15* century. His name is related to the foundation of the Jesuit Academy in Trnava (Nagyszombat (1554), considered by some as the first university in the Hungarian Monarchy. The Romanian historiography indicates among the Romanians who studied at European universities the members of the Ciula family: §tefan Ciula, who studied in 1445 in Cracow and respectively loan of Ciula, who studied at the same university between 1492 and 1494. Another member of the Ciula family, Filip More of Ciula, later royal secretary, diplomat 1 Out of the rich bibliography dedicated to the religious union we mention: Octavian Bdrlea-.
