Back to the Origins: the Historical Background of the Reform of the Vocational Teacher Education in the 1930s

Thanks to changes in legislation and regulations, vocational teacher training has been experiencing a major reform since September 2017. The disciplinary division into bachelor's and master's degree continues to be the form of training in vocational teacher education. Graduate engineers, agricultural engineers and economists preparing for the teaching profession have to gain knowledge only, or mostly only, in the field of pedagogy and psychology. After master's studies, they can gain a teacher certificate even within a year. In the 1930s, a system of vocational teacher training was developed in Hungary which resembles the current one from several aspects. The study examines which elements of the currently implemented reform have historical counterparts, and to what extent this reform may be perceived as a return to the traditions of vocational teacher training.
