The Social Background of the 16th-Century Students from Zala County of the Protestant Wittenberg University

All of the few 16th-century peregrines of the Protestant Wittenberg University from Zala County were members of the lesser nobility. In Zala, there was no free royal town, not even a significant market town in the medieval and in the early modern period. While Reformation in Tolna County and Baranya County, to the south of Zala, was connected to the wealthy bourgeoisie of the market towns, no source indicates this was the case in Zala, too. Without the bourgeoisie and the wealthy inhabitants of the market towns, the distribution of the ideas of the new faith can be connected to the lesser nobility of bene possesionatus.
