THE RELATIONS

OF THE HUNGARIAN SOCIALIST WORKERS PARTY AND THE GERMAN SOCIALIST UNITY PARTY BETWEEN MAY 1988 AND SEPTEMBER 1989

The main purpose of my study is to provide a comprehensive picture of the relations between the Hungarian Socialist Workers< Party (MSZMP)

and

the German Socialist Unity Party (SED)

from

the year of the accession to power of Károly

Grósz until

the dissolution of the party in October 1989. In my paper, I discuss the events of the national party conference of the MSZMP

held

from 20 to 22 May 1988 and the details of the meeting between General Secretaries of the parties Károly Grósz and

Erich Honecker in East Berlin in early September 1988. I will briefly describe the development of bilateral economic relations before the regime change, cultural and academic cooperation, and the refugee issue in the summer of 1989.
