Experiences, possible directions

With the amendments to Act LXVI of 1995 on public records, public archives and the protection of private archival material, the National Archives of Hungary (NAH) was granted authority at the national level for the protection of public records from 1 September 2021 and from 1 January 2022 for the protection of public records. In the case of public documents of provenance, the legal mandate gives the state the possibility to purchase privately owned public documents of lasting value or to deposit them in the archives of a public body, or to add copies to its own or another archive's collection. The public authority's power to protect public documents helps to ensure the preservation of public documents stored in inappropriate conditions in public archives, thus avoiding the possibility of forced disposal. In addition to the legal background, we will also look at the experience gained so far, look ahead to 2022 and briefly outline our long-term objectives.
