DÓRA C ZEFERNER SNAPSHOTS FROM THE HISTORY OF MODERN NURSING EDUCATION IN EUROPE AND HUNGARY 2020 was declared by the World Health Organisation as the International year of the Nurse and Midwife in the memory of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nithingale. The paper points out why is she the pioneer of the modern nursing, but also discusses what methods were used in this area before the 19th century. The study answers the question, how Nightingale laid down the fundaments of the education of nurses, and how their frames were changed during the last one and a half century. The dilemma according to which she can be cosedered a feminist or an antifeminist also appears in the paper. Why is her work greatly respected in Great Britain even today, and how well known is her name outside the country? What about her Hungarian contemporary, Zsuzsanna Kossuth? Why did the Hungarian historiography and public opinion forget her name? And finally, why do people nowadays stumble into the name of Nightingale (and Zsuzsanna Kossuth) or into the thoughts quoted from them among the news about the coronavirus more and more often?
