GYÖRGY R ÁCZ THE NATIONALISATION OF THE FORMER ENTAIL AND FAMILY ARCHIVES AFTER 1945 – THE CASE OF THE BATTHYÁNY AND NÁDASDY ARCHIVES Between 1945 and 1950 the National Archives of Hungary obtained a large amount of materials from private archives, most of them came from family archives. The study investigates with till unused sources the situation before 1945, the legal state after 1945, entail nature and the circumstances of the nationalization of the latter. Due to the Government decree 449/2013. (XI. 28.) the National Archives of Hungary had to deal with two restitutions, which tried to return the archival material back to the original owner. The most important statement of the paper is that the connection between the family entails and family archives can be classified into three main types. 1.: documents regarding the administration of smaller entails – founded in the 19th century – which were nationalized together with the estate (Pallavicini family). 2.: in the case the large entails of the aristocracy, the family archives became the part of the entail (Esterházy, Batthyány, Erdődy, Festetich, Nádasdy of Nádasdladány families). These archives became state property by the act Nr. VII of 1949. 3.: those family archives form a separate type, which as foundation became or remained in the joint management of the members of the family, regardless of the entail (Károlyi, Széchényi families).
