1968: HOPE, DISAPPOINTMENT AND POLITICAL ACTIVITY The study explores why the year 1968 has become an important historical symbol, what it meant to the contemporaries and reminiscences, and how various institutions of the communist party sought to create a myth for themselves based on 1968. This year was important not only because symbolised a new kind of political activity for the generation which was born after the World War 2, but also because the primary function of the Party backed nostalgia about 1968 was to legitimate the existing regime in the 1980s. In addition, the opposition or student movements, which associated to 1968 at first seemed to be as allies of the Party, because they revolted against the “capitalist system”. Due to this, they were made widely known in Hungary. The reason for all of this was that the propaganda of the socialist state was trying to justify that they created a more humane world order than capitalism. 1968: remény, csalódás és politikai szerepvállalás
