LEVENTE N AGY ROMANIAN CALVINIST-ORTHODOX POLEMICS IN THE LIGHT OF 17TH CENTURY CATECHISMS In 1642, György Csulai’s Romanian translation on the Heidelberg catechism was published with the support of the court preacher of George I Rákóczi, the Transylvanian prince. Varlaam, the archbishop of Moldavia, immediately replied with a polemic. One of the important documents of this debate is the Romanian anti-Calvinist polemic-written in Transylvania between 1640 and 1645 – Spunerea legiei (The Law), which is kept in the manuscript archives of the Bucharest Academy Library, and it is still unpublished. It gives a special significance to the document that it shows what the Romanians did and did not understand of the teachings of Reformation. A reformáció és magyarországi öröksége 76
