Byrnes amerikai külügyminiszter memoranduma Truman elnöknek a magyar kormány­küldöttség látogatásáról MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT Subject: Visit of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Justice The Hungarian Delegation, headed by the Prime Minister, which is calling on you at 11:15 A. M., June 13, has come to this country for the purpose of obtaining moral, spiritual and economic assistance for Hungary. You will recall that as a result of free and fair elections held last November, which returned a 60% majority for the moderate Smallholders Party, 1 Hungary was recognized by this Government and full diplomatic relations were established with it. In an effort to support the democratic regime in that country we have already extended a surplus property purchase credit of 10 million dollars and took the initiative in obtaining an UNRRA program for Hungary amounting to 4 million dollars. Undersecretary Warner tells us that during a call which Bede, Hungarian political representative made on him this morning, Bede remarked that visits to Washington and London were undertaken by Nagy and his party primarily in the hope of getting concessions preferably in the nature of restoration of Hungarian assets abroad to bolster position of govt. Bede went on to explain that when Nagy and his party returned from recent Moscow visit and announced that reception in Moscow had been most friendly Hungarian public was led to expect some concessions from Soviets. As days passed and no concessions were made popular feeling toward govt cooled very noticeably and in this not only Nagy as Smallholders leader suffered but Communists as well.
