The British Government has intervened in Hungarian politics on many occasions since the armistice, often with important results. May I express the fervent hope that the influence of our Government will be exerted at the present moment to save the lives of these men? In the case of at least two of them there are very special grounds for our intervention. It was Sir Thomas Cuninghame who, with Herr Boehm, drafted the terms or surrender of the Soviet Government towards the end of last July, and in the Cabinet subsequently formed with the request of Sir Thomas Cuninghame, the British Military Representative, and these two men had not remained behindin Hungary at the request of our Government, their lives would not now be at the mercy of their political enemies. Because they remained behind as a moderating influence, they have now a claim upon our consideration. In point of fact I am assured that none of the four condemned men were responsible for the political leadership of the Commune. Their presence in the Government of Béla Kun was a well recognised guarantee against the extremists .. . Their execution may have important political reactions in Hungary for a long time and I hope, not only because of their obligations, but also in ground of international policy, that our Government will intervene at once to stop the executions. Таковы; позиция Великобританнии о ноте Викса, обращения эмигрантской венгерской земельной аристократии, требовавшей интервенции, отрицательные ответы на них со стороны Великобританнии, донесения о ситуации в Венгрии, материалы переговоров, которые велись в Вене, в июле 1919 г. между дипломатами антанты и руководителями венгерских профсоюзов по вопросу о создании чисто социалистического правительства и политическая ответственность британской дипломатии за эти переговоры.
