136 Karsai Elek received Monsieur Poincaré called upon Monsieur Briand hurriedly and angrily reminded him that, when President of the Republic, ha had given his word to the Italian Government that no support would ever be given to the Ex-Emperor Karl or any member of his family. Since this interview, Monsieur Briand informed all his friends that he never gave any encouragement to the adventure. In conversation with Monsieur Briand the other day, I referred to the Ex-Emperor Karl's attempted return and he at once launched forth into a vehement disclaimer of any knowledge beforehand of the adverture or of any encouragement have been given to the Ex-Emperor by the French Government. But he added there is no doubt that the Ex-Emperor had received great encouragement from the old monarchical families and that the reason for his precipitate action was that he had been informed that there was a competitor in the field in the person of the son of the Archduke Joseph, and that unless the Ex-Emperor took action in the near future he would find himself forestalled and his chances lost. It is interesting to note that this statement made to me by Monsieur Briand tallies with what Prince Sixte told Colonel Strutt on the 23rd February at 47, rue de Varenne. From other sources I have ascertained that the Pope was aware of the plot, but had discouraged action at an early date, stating that reliance could not be placed upon the French Government and that before anything was done it would be desirable to secure a favourable attitude on the part of His Majesty's Government. On the other hand, the Duc de Doudeamville, father-in-law to Prince Sixte, has told me privately, and I have every reason to believe what he says, that according to his information Monsieur Briand knew nothing of the ExEmperors attempted coup. Evidently he was in touch with Karlist circles and some unguarded remark of his may have been incorrectly repeated. A. Cadogan April 26. 1921." Alatta С. Kivonat: Nagy érdeklődéssel tanulmányozta Strutt memorandumát, ennek utána magánpuhatolódzás útján próbált bizonyosságot szerezni-Briand-nak a puccsban betöltött szerepéről. Bár rendkívül nehéz bármiféle határozott következtetésre jutni, számos jel arra mutat, hogy „Briand nem volt teljesen tájékozatlan az események tekintetében." Briand kapcsolatban volt Károly három barátjával és az exuralkodó innen nyerhetett biztatást. Amikor a királypuccs híre megérkezett, Poincaré állítólag szemrehányást tett Briandnak, utána Briand hevesen cáfolta, hogy bármi módon biztatta volna Károlyt a visszatérésre. Briand kifejtette Hardingnak, hogy Károly elhamarkodott akciójának oka az lehetett, hogy tudomást szerzett József főherceg tervéről. Más források szerint a pápa tudott a puccsról, de helytelenítette az akció megkezdését mindaddig, míg nem biztosítják az angol kormány támogatását, miután a francia kormányra nem lehet építeni. Végül: Duc de Doudenville, Sixtus apósa közölte vele, hogy értesülése szerint Briand nem tudott e puccsról. Cadogan jegyzete: Nem igen lehet azt várni, hogy tökéletes bizonyosságot lehet szerezni Briand bunrészességéről. Feltehetően kapcsolatban volt karlista körökkel és néhány óvatlan megjegyzését inkorrekt módon adták tovább. Guflin megjegyzése: „Űgy hiszem, hogy Briand az egész idő alatt benne volt a puccsban."
