Summary MARIANNE KASZÁS The types of files of guilds, trade societies and master artisan's chambers Archivál Methodolical and Educational Papers No.2. The present volume is a contribution to the series published by the Hungárián National Archives on the research problems of historical documentation. As opposed to the sort of archivál sources discussed by the previous volumes of the series, the files of the guilds, the trade societies and the master artisan's chambers covered by recent work did not survive in great quantity. The types of files both produced and used by the trade societies are not even dealt with separately because the organizations concerned were with few exeptions shortlived. Initially, they were attached to the historical patterns pursued by the guilds, the registration books left by the latter ones being taken over. Later on, the few surviving, more permanent trade societies, like the Budapest Coffee-house Trade Society, used the same kinds of files as the master artisan's chambers. It is impossible to describe and understand the function of each of the documents issued and kept by the master artisan's chambers without having a look at the types of matériái created both by the trade authorities and the managing organizations. Accordingly, somé of the documents concerning the vocational training (files on the journeymen's and masters' examinations) and the ones compiled by the trade management and relating to labour issues (e.g. the trade register) are alsó to be found among the files of the supervisory organizations. Without them the description of the documents attached to the master artisan's chambers would be incomplete. Discussing the types of the files individually we retained the contemporary designations, e.g. journeymen's and masters' exams. To stress the intimate connection of the similar sort of files, the matériái of the master artisan's chambers has been ordered not alphabetically, but thematically and follows alphabetical order only within that framework. The use of the volume is assisted by an unified index of subject at the end of the book.
