After considerable persuasion, Chancellor Mayr had expressed his willingness to enter into negotiations with Hungary, on the following conditions: 1. The Italian Government assumes the rôle of mediator ; 2. The mediation by Italy will be carried out in a spirit of conciliation ; 3. Hungary enters into the negotiations in good faith. Prince Castagneto emphasized that, in suggesting this mediation, Count Sforza merely desires to give expression to his loyalty to, and sincere sympathy for, Hungary; he has no other purpose in view but to secure an understanding between Austria and Hungary. Prince Castagneto begs the Minister for Foreign Affairs, to reply as soon as possible to the proposal outlined above. January 10, 1921.
