1921 595 No. 579 329/M. K. res. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Bánffy, to the Hungarian Chargé d'affaires in Berne, Mr. Parcher. [TRANSLATION] You are requested to call on the chief of the Foreign Office 1 and to ask the Federal Council in the name of the Hungarian Government that King Charles should be allowed to stay on in Switzerland after the month of August under the existing arrangement. 2 You should explain that the Federal Council would greatly oblige the Royal Hungarian Government by granting this request. You should emphasize to the chief of the Foreign Office that the Hungarian Government as well as King Charles himself tried in vain to obtain permission for him to reside in other countries, 3 and that therefore the peace of Central Europe is dependent on the decision of the Swiss Federal Council. The Hungarian Government is fully aware of the difficulties involved in this decision of the Federal Council, for which reason it endeavoured to secure the right of asylum in other countries. As these steps did not lead to any result, the Hungarian Government is again compelled to appeal to the benevolence of the Swiss Government. By granting the permit to reside, Switzerland would not only follow her traditional policy of hospitality, but would render signal service to the cause of peace and order in Central Europe, service of inestimable value not only to Hungary, but to all the States concerned in the question, and to the Allies as well. 4 No. 580. ooo/M.K.res.
