1921 83 No. 80. 566/po . The Hungarian Chargé d'affaires in Vienna, Mr. Masirevich, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gratz. Mr. Pogatscher declared to me that, according to his information, the meeting between Dr. Benes and Chancellor Mayr 1 was not preceded by any negotiations or preparations; the Chancellor decided at the last minute to take advantage bf Dr. Benes's journey through Austrian territory for a meeting. As to the intended interview, on the other hand, between President Hainisch and President Masaryk, I hear that messages have been being exchanged for some time between Vienna and Prague. I understand that they are old friends since they were fellow-students at the University and that freemasonry is yet another link between them. No. 81. 53/res. pol. The Representative of the Hungarian Government in Paris, Mr. Praznovszky, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gratz. General Tánczos reports as follows: In confidential conversations with a leading Polish personality I learned that Polish circles do not expect much result from Marshal Pilsudski's visit. France cannot give either soldiers, munitions or money. Thus Poland seems tc\ be left to her own resources; whether Rumania would assist her against the Bolsheviks is not known in Paris. Further rapprochement between Poland and Hungary is therefore primarily in the interest of Poland. My informant promised to tell me by Saturday 2 noon the results of Marshal Pilsudski's negotiations in Paris. 3 1 Cf. supra, Doc. No. 79; and infra, Doc. No. 84. 2 February g. 3 Cf. supra, Doc.
